Teacher's Notes: This unit is an
advanced elective. In the
NSW Stage 6 English Preliminary syllabus electives are designed
by teachers to meet the needs of students' needs and abilities.
Electives 'explore the ways particular texts, forms, media, contexts
or aspects of language shape meaning'. (p44). In this unit students explore the form, structure and language features of Animal Farm
and investigate the ways novels reflect cultural values and
challenge social realities. They compare the novel to an animated
transformation of the novel and learn about the Orwell's context and
the relationship between context and meaning.
Learning Objectives:
- Read and analyse the form,
structure and language features of the novel.
- Describe the historical events
that are referred to in Animal Farm.
- Explain the use of allegory in
Animal Farm.
- Explain the way Animal Farm
challenges ideas about equality, class and social justice.
- Evaluate the way the
animated film reflects changing social values.
- Compose an essay on : “The
best stories explore identity and relationships”. In what ways
does your set text explore identity and relationships?
