African Poetry

Home

Teacher's Notes: Language has the power to create a national identity and influence the thinking of new generations.  Students explore a collection of poems by post colonial African writers who reflect on the effects of colonialism and find new ways to 'reclaim the centre' of their history and their national identity. This unit introduces students to questions of culture and context and revisits the language of poetry in ways that take students beyond their borders. For Australian students there are obvious and confronting parallels to the colonization of Australia.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the themes of the set poems.

  • Describe the forms, structures and language features of the set poems.

  • Evaluate the post colonial perspectives of the poems.

  • Compose essays on questions of identity , power and oppression.

  • Define meanings of key vocabulary.

  • Draw conclusions about the features of post colonial writing.
