Visual Cinderella

Teacher's Notes: Cinderella has been idealised in paintings, film and picture books. This task looks at the ways Cinderella has been represented and asks students to consider the values reflected in these images. Students work in pairs to complete the task. The task may also introduce students toWord features and give them practice in saving an image and insert it into a word document. This revamped online lesson may be useful when Year 9 get their laptops!

 

Expectations:
  • Describe representations of Cinderella.
  • Explain the ways representations of Cinderella reflect cultural values.
  1. Work with a partner.

  2. Examine images of Cinderella from theses sites:

    Cinderella illustrations

    The Cinderella artists

    Fairy Tale illustrations

  3. Select 3 images from different time periods. Copy these images to a word file.

  4. Include information on the publication, the painter or illustrator and the time.

  5. Look closely at each image. Use the following questions to guide you analysis:

    • Where is Cinderella in the picture?

    • Is there any one else in the picture?

    • What objects or people are in the picture?

    • Who dominates the picture?

    • What does the position of Cinderella suggest about her status?

    • What colours are used?

    • What mood is created by these colours?

    • How is Cinderella dressed?

    • What is suggested about her character by this clothing?

    • Describe her face.

    • What is suggested by her facial features and expression?

    • Are there any symbols in the image? What do the symbols mean?

  6. List the similarities and differences of the three images.

  7. How do you account for the different ways Cinderella is represented?
