Overview
These lessons have been developed
with Junior Primary or Elementary students in mind. They might
easily be adapted for older students. The students sections have all the
necessary handouts inbuilt if you are working on hard copies. If you are
working online students and teachers may copy and paste the materials
provided in order to complete their work.
The first lesson is intended as an
introduction to looking at selected sites on the web when searching for
information. It presumes that students are familiar with their school's
process of logging on and that they know how to click on a URL in their
email box and/or to type simple URLs. It also presumes some simple
familiarity with the internet and it's functions.
The second lesson is a guided search
designed to follow a questioning model. The students search for specific
information in response to open ended questions and record their findings, and to some
extent, their understanding.
The final section of the site is the
Webquest. This is a more interactive and creative element of the learning
process. As such, teachers will need to provide effective scaffolding
for students to experience success within the unit of work. It assumes some teacher preparation and learning in advance. It also
assumes that students have some experience at working collaboratively and
that they have previous experiences in presenting work to others.
A note about Resources
included with this site. We
have spent many online hours searching for resources suitable for this age
group. Our list is by no means exhaustive or comprehensive but provides a
cross section of what is available. Many sites will require some teacher
or adult guidance as they are quite complex in text and navigation. We
have only included a small number of text based resources as we have
developed this unit for implementation in an online environment. At
the time of publication all links are active. |
